An early modernist and historian of science/knowledge in East Asia, Wilson Chan is Assistant Professor at Hong Kong Chu Hai College. He holds a PhD in the History of Chinese Science and Technology from The University of Hong Kong. Utilising a socio-material approach characterised by the intersection of texts, practices, knowledge, and objects, his research examines the history of science, material culture, artisanship, and intellectual exchange since Ming and Qing China. His recent work focuses on knowledge production and systems of knowledge in South China and Hong Kong. He is currently completing two monographs: one on the written traditions of ink artisans in China and Japan (1300–1900), and another on the late Qing Guangdong scholar Chen Li (1810–1882) and his role in reshaping intellectual frameworks of late Qing and Republican China.
